About This Spot

Rico’s Cafe is the kind of place that quietly anchors its small-town community, where time seems to move at a gentler pace and the day’s rhythm is shaped by familiar faces and heartfelt hellos. Nestled on North Broadway in Mertzon, this unassuming spot welcomes you with the soft hum of conversation and the comforting scent of home-cooked meals carried through the air. The atmosphere here is unpretentious and warm, a pause from the rush, where locals gather and visitors find a genuine connection to West Texas hospitality.

Walking into Rico’s feels like stepping into someone’s cherished kitchen—nothing flashy, but everything thoughtfully prepared. The cafe’s modest scale makes it a cozy nook for catching up over a plate of food that clearly carries decades of tradition. Whether you arrive for a hearty breakfast taco that sets the tone for the day or linger over a burger so generously portioned it almost demands a two-handed approach, the pace invites slow savoring rather than hurried bites.

The menu is a reflection of the landscape around it—simple, satisfying, and made to comfort. Dishes arrive with a familiar richness, like freshly made tortillas still warm and the kind of beans that taste like a recipe passed down and perfected. Here, the food isn’t just fuel; it’s a daily ritual, a quiet celebration of flavors that feel honest and approachable. Even the drinks—tea, coffee, or a bottled soda—add to that easy-going, come-as-you-are vibe.

What lingers longest in memory after a meal at Rico’s isn’t just the taste but the connection—a genuine welcome from people who know the value of making others feel at home. It’s no surprise that this cafe has remained a beloved part of the Mertzon neighborhood for many years, standing apart not by show but by the steady comfort it offers each visitor through good food and good will.

Just a small town hole in the wall. This places has been there for decades! Not sure about anything but breakfast but they have the best breakfast tacos I've had west of fort worth.

I must say, the enchilada sauce was very flavorful along with the beans and rice that was served. Hospitality, coming from someone that was in the business for over 30 years, was very warm and welcoming.

Small towns have the best food and the best service. Chicken fry was amazing. It’s worth the drive if you live in San Angelo. I haven’t had a chicken fry this good in 10 years.

Pretty average looking place, so I was really surprised when our food came. Super friendly and on the spot with service at boot! I got the double meat cheeseburger and it was so big I had to squish it to get it in my mouth.... barely. And the french fries were delicious, some crunchies on them.

Many restaurants have come and gone in Mertzon, but Rico's has been here more than 15 years, with consistently high quality. Everything is delicious, from burritos to burgers, and breakfast is great too. It's not cheap, but operating in a small town never is. Rico's is a gem out here in the desert.

Very good food for the middle of nowhere. The prices are fair for the location. You're 30 min tot he closest city, but for people who work in the area, this is good mood food. Menu has good selection. Food is always hot and fresh.

Typical diner food and Tex-Mex dishes prepared mostly in the Concho Valley style. If you like mom-and-pop holes in the wall like I do, look no further. Pricier than I expected but I'd definitely go back again sometime.
